The Play «Marriage»

The Play «Marriage»

About the event

«Marriage» by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol as interpreted by director Dmitry Akimov is a dialogue of eras: the classic of the 19th century meets the modern theatrical language.

The play, which at first glance seems to be an everyday comedy, reveals the deep contradictions of human nature — the fear of responsibility and the absurdity of social rituals.

At the center is the figure of the official Podkolyosin, who faces the question «to marry or not» — and this becomes a real moral catastrophe for him. Yes, yes, just like Hamlet, only with a St. Petersburg flavor and Gogol's humor.

Special attention in this play is given to the costumes. They do not just recreate the era, but become an expressive means of characters: the bride's dress is not just an outfit, but a symbol of her dreams; the grooms' uniforms are a caricature of bureaucratic importance; the matchmaker's costume is a whirlwind of energy and cunning.

What else awaits the audience in «Marriage» from the «Masterovye» theater:

- witty play with the classics;

- bright, memorable characters (the bride-«sweetheart», the unlucky grooms, the virtuoso matchmaker);

- an unexpected ending;

- the opportunity to see how Gogol's irony remains relevant centuries later.
